A Handmade Christmas

When my husband and I first got married, we had a little 3 foot tall Christmas tree {that he left up all year long} and the few ornaments I had from growing up. We had the typical super tight newlywed budget and couldn’t afford to go out and buy a lot of Christmas decorations, so we made due with what we had.

Fast forward to a year ago and my grandma gave me a full size Christmas tree that she no longer needed. So now I had a tree but not nearly enough ornaments to fill it up. Our budget had not changed much {still hasn’t} so I got creative and searched for ornaments that I could make for cheap that would still be cute and fit my style.

You’d actually be surprised what you can come up with when it’s your only option. I’m really excited to add these diy homemade cinnamon applesauce Christmas ornaments to the mix this year!

Primitive, Classic, Traditional, Cutesy – You Choose

The beauty of making your own Christmas ornaments and specifically homemade cinnamon ornaments is that you can make them any way you want. Any shape or style from plain stars to gingerbread men fully decked out for the holidays. I really love the snowflake ones!

Also, you can customize your homemade ornaments to be exactly how you want if you’re going for a certain style for your Christmas decorations. Planning a primitive tree? Cut your ornaments with traditional shaped cookie cutters and leave them undecorated. Blue and white? After your cinnamon cookie ornaments are dry, “frost” them with blue and white puff paint. The only limit to the possibilities is your imagination!

Not only are these perfect for decorating the tree, you could use smaller cookie cutters and make adorable gift “tags” with them! Or string them together and make a festive, wonderful smelling diy Christmas garland.

Why Make Homemade Ornaments?

Making your own Christmas ornaments can be such fun family time making memories that your kids will cherish for years to come. Unless they’re teenagers in which case it’ll be as much torture for you as it is for them. Let’s just be honest here.

One of my favorite things about decorating the Christmas tree is to pull out all of the ornaments that I either made or was given as a child. I would recommend dating your cinnamon cookie ornaments because looking at the dates on the old ones is my favorite part of pulling them all out. It’s so nostalgic and reminiscent of “the good old days” and fills me with happy holiday feelings.

And let’s not forget how much money you can save by making your own ornaments with inexpensive or foraged ingredients! Cute, fun, and cheap? Count me in!

Kid Safe Gingerbread Cookie Ornaments

This Christmas I’ll have a 20 month old who loves to get in to everything! Most of the recipes for homemade cinnamon appleasauce ornaments call for glue. Since I’m making a kid safe version, I’m leaving it out. They may not last quite as many years, but that’s just a good reason to make more!

I know these cinnamon ornaments on the tree are going to be a huge temptation so it’s important to me that they be safe in case she sneaks a bite of one before I can stop her. After all, they do look exactly like cookies.  I’m sure they taste horrible enough that she’d spit it right out, but you never know!

Minimalist Scandinavian Inspired Charm

I love that these simple homemade cinnamon ornaments have a natural, Scandinavian look to them. They’re rustic, simple, and have such an old world appeal. To me, they conjure up feelings of coziness and of slowing down to enjoy the Christmas season for what it is: a time to be with the ones you love and ponder on the miracle of our Savior’s birth.

What You Need For DIY Cinnamon Ornaments:

  • 1 – 1 1/2 cups Cinnamon
  • 1 cup Applesauce
  • Straw or skewer to make holes for hanging
  • Twine or ribbon for hanging

How To Make DIY Cinnamon Ornaments:

  1. Mix together cinnamon and applesauce. You may need a little more applesauce if you find them too dry or a little more cinnamon if they’re too loose. I ended up with about 1 cup applesauce and 1 1/2 cup cinnamon.
  2. Dust your surface with cinnamon and roll out to desired thickness. I shoot for a good sugar cookie thickness.*
  3. Cut out with Christmas shaped cookie cutters and make hole for hanging.
  4. Gather up scraps, re-roll out and continue cutting until all of the “dough” is used.
  5. Bake at 200° for 2 hours or until dry and hard.
  6. Let cool. If desired, decorate with puff paint or 3d fabric paint.
  7. Allow to dry completely and string with twine or ribbon.

***Notes:

-You can roll your dough between layers of wax paper or dust the surface with extra cinnamon to keep the “dough” from sticking to the rolling pin. I find them to be the easiest with the cinnamon method.

-I find dough a little on the drier texture and rolled out a little thinner bakes better. The thicker, wetter ones cracked really bad while the thinner ones wanted to curl up.

-If you want to use glue to make them a little sturdier, add 2 tablespoons white school glue. You’ll need to reduce the applesauce a little to compensate for the extra wetness.
