Saltine Cracker Toffee Bar Recipe AKA Christmas Crack

These saltine toffee bars are a hit no matter where you take them and they couldn’t be easier to make.  There’s a reason people call them “Christmas Crack”! Bring them to your next family gathering and watch them disappear!

Saltine Cracker Toffee Bars aka Christmas Crack is such a simple recipe to make but it’s one of the most popular things I have ever made. It literally seems addicting. You just can’t stop yourself from coming back and getting “just one more little piece”. Consider yourself duly warned!

The Easiest, Quickest “Candy”

When you read the recipe, I could see how it could seem long or difficult for the first time, but it’s not! Compared to other holiday treats that many people make, it couldn’t be easier. No candy thermometer with certain temperatures that you have to reach. Just combine, stir, heat, pour, devour!

I actually don’t make this recipe very often for the simple reason that if I do, I’ll eat it all by myself in a very short amount of time! My husband isn’t a toffee fan so if I’m not making it to take somewhere, it’s up to me to make sure they don’t sit too long and get stale. It’s a dangerous substance to have around, especially if you’re trying to go easy on the sugar. But oh, it’s so delicious!

Crunchy Salty Caramely Goodness

To be perfectly honest, when I first heard about the whole saltine toffee concept I actually thought it sounded pretty disgusting. It was years ago and I hadn’t yet been introduced to the wonderful world of salt + caramel + chocolate. Let me just say, these saltine cracker toffee bars or crunch bars, as my friends called them, rocked my chocolate loving world! Now I’m a full blown, salted caramel chocolate lover.

crunch + salt + caramel + chocolate = my kind of math!

Saltine Cracker Toffee Variations:

The classic recipe is my favorite, but there are so many ways you can customize these toffee bars. Simply change out the nuts for any topping. Red and green m & m’s would make a really festive touch for a Christmas treat. Or top them with toasted coconut chips. Crushed oreos. Chopped peanut butter. Crushed candy canes. Andes mints. Sea salt. The possibilities are literally endless.

Saltine Toffee Bars Ingredients:

  • 35 Saltine crackers
  • 1/2 cup butter {1 stick}
  • 1/2 light brown sugar
  • 8 oz semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 – 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

How To Make Saltine Toffee Bars:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°.
  2. Cover a large 10 x 15″ cookie sheet with parchment paper or foil. {it needs to have sides!}
  3. Spread crackers on pan, touching each other.
  4. In a small pot, melt together butter and brown sugar, mixing well*.
  5. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  6. Boil for 3 minutes, WITHOUT stirring. {to 270° if you’re a precision person or having problems}
  7. Pour over crackers and spread quickly.
  8. Bake for 5-7 minutes. It will be bubbly and caramelized.
  9. Sprinkle chocolate chips over top and bake just long enough to melt them completely*.
  10. Remove from oven and spread chocolate evenly over crackers. {Lick chocolate off spreader}
  11. Sprinkle with nuts and allow to cool.
  12. Break or cut in to pieces. Pro tip: if cutting, use a pizza cutter. Works like a dream!
  13. Store in an airtight container.

***Notes:

Step 4) It’s very important to get the butter and brown sugar completely incorporated together before it starts boiling. Use a whisk if needed to mix them well.

Step 9)I usually don’t even need to put them back in the oven if the bars are still good and hot. Be careful not to burn the chocolate chips or they won’t spread. You just want them melted enough to spread. Literally 20 seconds in the oven.

For extra toffee goodness, you can 1 1/2 times or even double the butter and brown sugar!

Can You Freeze Saltine Cracker Toffee?

Yes! If frozen for a long time, it’s possible that they may not be quite as crisp when thawed. They stay good for a while if kept in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerated so you can make them ahead of time if needed. {that would never work in my house 😉 }
