Health Benefits Of Chickpeas

“Hummus, because of its chickpea content, is a source not only of protein, but also dietary fiber, resistant starch, polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, especially folate, calcium, magnesium, and potassium.” Source

That’s pretty impressive!! If how delicious hummus is isn’t enough to get you to try your hand at making your own, maybe the research on the health benefits of hummus and it’s main ingredient will convince you.

“Emerging research suggests that chickpeas and hummus may play a beneficial role in weight management and glucose and insulin regulation, as well as have a positive impact on some markers of cardiovascular disease (CVD).” Source

I actually didn’t know all of these health benefits before researching for this post and it has me thinking I need to make hummus more than I already do! Delicious and healthy? That’s a total win in my book!

Healthy Homemade Hummus Recipe Variations

There are so many ways that you can dress up a basic hummus recipe. Try topping it with roasted red peppers, roasted garlic, or add some cayenne for a kick. Or change it up by using a different dipper. Instead of pita chips {my favorite} you could use carrots, bell peppers and other veggies to scoop it up.

One of my favorite ways to spice up a recipe of basic hummus is to load it up and create Loaded Mediteranean Hummus. I’ll make it every so often as a special supper and it gets devoured!

Basic Homemade Hummus Ingredients

  • 1 pound drained and rinsed chickpeas (29 oz can). Boil the chickpeas until tender if you’re really wanting a super smooth texture.
  • 2/3 cup lemon juice, fresh is best for this recipe
  • 1/2 cup tahini
  • 1/2 to 1 cup water or reserved liquid from chickpea can
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 3 0r 4 cloves garlic
  • olive oil

Homemade Hummus Instructions

  1. Place chickpeas in blender with enough water to blend. You could use the lemon juice for this step for a stiffer hummus and add water/oil later if the hummus is too thick.
  2. Blend chickpeas until smooth.
  3. Add remaining ingredients and blend well.
  4. Taste and adjust garlic and and salt as needed.
  5. Top with your favorite toppings or enjoy as is!

Storing Your Homemade Hummus

I’ve heard you can freeze hummus if you’d like to portion it out and save some for later, but ours rarely makes it past the day it’s made!

If you store your hummus in the fridge, it’ll likely thicken up some so don’t be afraid to stir in a little extra liquid if you don’t care for the next-day thicker consistency.
