Homemade Ranch Dressing Or Dip Recipe

Making your own homemade ranch dressing couldn’t get much easier and it tastes so much better than store bought that you’ll likely never go back to pre-packaged ranch again!

the best homemade ranch dressing

There are about as many different ranch dressing recipes out there as there are so to claim that this is the best ranch dressing recipe would be quite a bold statement. But I will say that we think it’s the best and its been a permanent fixture in our fridge for about the last 2 years.

Containing ingredients that you most likely already have on hand, it’s great if you’re a last minute meal planner like I tend to be and decide on a treat of loaded cheesy fries for a quick and tasty supper. That’s one of my favorite I-had-no-plan-but-have-frozen-fries-and-cheese-and-its-supper-time meals that’s always a major hit!

Homemade Ranch Dressing Ingredients:

  • 1/2 c Hellman’s Mayo
  • 1/2 sour cream – full fat Daisy is my favorite
  • 2 T dill pickle juice
  • 2 T buttermilk – leave out for a dip or add more for a thinner dressing
  • 1/4 t salt
  • 1/4 t pepper
  • 1/2 t dried parsley
  • 1/2 t onion powder
  • 1/2 t garlic powder
  • 1 t dried dill weed

How To Make Ranch Dressing From Scratch:

Making the dressing couldn’t be easier. Simply mix all of the ingredients together and enjoy. Store any leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator. A mason jar works good and is what I use.

It’s a good idea to write the date you made the dressing on a little piece of masking tape and stick it on the top if you’re forgetful like me and won’t remember.

Is Homemade Always Better?

One of my favorite things about making things homemade and specifically ranch dressing is that you can customize it any way you want. Prefer a thin, light dressing? Add extra milk. Want a thick, rich dip? Leave the milk out completely.

Plus you can make things much healthier by being able to exclude so many of the preservatives and other unsavory things in the majority of store bought products. You can even go completely scratch and make your own mayo and sour cream, dry your own herbs, and know exactly what’s going in to your food.

Substitutions In Homemade Ranch Dressing

While I will always maintain that Hellman’s Mayo {this is not sponsored by Hellman’s by the way. I’m not paid to say this, I just really think it’s the best.} will give you the best flavored ranch dressing, you could definitely sub for something else if you’re out of mayo or trying to lighten it up a little.

Greek yogurt would work nicely but beware that it’ll give your ranch dressing a tangier flavor for sure. Greek yogurt would make your ranch be healthier and not so calorie dense. It doesn’t take much ranch to go way overboard on calories!

The recipe calls for buttermilk but if you don’t have any you can use regular milk and it tastes great. Regular milk is actually all I ever use.

How Long Does Homemade Ranch Dressing Last?

Your homemade ranch dressing will last as long as the ingredients you use. As long as you use fresh mayo and sour cream your dressing will last 3-4 weeks at the least. Store your prepared dressing in a closed container in the refrigerator.
